Policy Paper: One for all, All for One: Diversity and Pluralism In The Palestinian Society

1. Introduction

American author and poet, Maya Angelou once said, “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength”. While uttered in an American context the importance of diversity and pluralism rings just as seminal in the Palestinian Territories as well. While often informed by the on-going conflict with Israel, it is often underreported that the Palestinian Territories is often informed by a diverse and pluralistic cultural and religious identity. BBC’s Alan Johnston reported in 2005 that Greeks, Egyptian Pharaohs, Persians, Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans and the British had all left a mark on the Palestinian Territories’ cultural history. Moreover, demographically, the Palestinian Territories also encompass a robust landscape of religious diversity.
